Esther Luvaine (Hembd) Todd, 79, of Sioux City went home peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, July 25, 2011, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be at a later date in Ocheyedan (Iowa) City Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home. Online condolences may be posted at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Esther was born April 6, 1932, in Rushmore, Minn., the daughter of Herman and Lena (Rosenberg) Hembd. Her early years were spent on a farm in Ocheyedan. Esther attended Concordia University in Seward, Neb., where she studied to be a teacher. She taught school briefly before she married and raised a family. Later in life she began teaching again.

She studied cosmetology and enjoyed that work for 28 years, retiring recently from Trade Secret in Sioux City. She was respected in her field and mentored many hair stylists during the years.

Esther learned to play piano at an early age and began to play in church at the age of 12. It was her great joy to play the organ at every church in which she was a member, most recently at Resurrection Lutheran Church. She instilled a love of God in each of her children and grandchildren. Her legacy is her faith in Christ that she shared with her family and everyone around her.

Survivors include seven children, Paula (Michael) Fields of Houston, Texas, Peggy (Stephen) Bolks of Houston, Patricia (James) Stansfield of Orange, Calif., Penny Todd of Sioux City, Philip (Ruth) Todd of Sloan, Iowa, Pamala Todd of Sioux City and LeAnn (Brian) Parks of Sioux City; 24 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marjorie Brockshus of Ocheyedan and Betty (Orville) Taylor of Hartley, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Marcella Hembd of Ocheyedan.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Amy Hembd; three brothers, Robert, Arnold and Gordon Hembd; three grandsons, Charlie Newberry, Jordan Hoffman and Zane Parks; and two sisters-in-law, Marjorie Mugge and Bonnie Hembd.
