Austin P. Cole, 78, of Muscatine, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, died Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Zion Lutheran Church in Muscatine, with the Rev. Steven Cauley officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home in Muscatine.

Austin was born May 10, 1933, in Sioux City, the son of Austin and Ruth (Borsting) Cole. He received his bachelor's degree in government from the University of South Dakota. He received his master's degree in foreign affairs from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

He married Emily Backlund Sept. 27, 1963, at Augustana Lutheran Church in Washington, D.C.

He worked for Stanley Consultants and HON Industries.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Muscatine Elks Chanters and Notables Quartet, Muscatine Civic Chorale and the Iowa City Chamber Singers.

Survivors include his wife, Emily Cole of Muscatine; three daughters, Karen (Lee) Stock and their children, Jacob, Payton and Luke Stock of Decorah, Iowa; Kirsten (Ron) Regenwether and their children, Meghan McLaughlin, Annika and Gavin Regenwether of Spragueville, Iowa, and Barbara (Jon) Clements and their children, Isabelle and Madeline Clements of Russellville, Ark.; a brother, Duane (Evelyn) Cole of Bend, Ore.; a sister, Anita (Bill) Ide of Tacoma, Wash.; and a brother-in-law, James Rodeen of Colorado Springs, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Constance Rodeen.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Zion Lutheran Church, Holden Cancer Center at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics or Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
