Tim Hupke, 59, of Danbury died unexpectedly Monday, July 18, 2011, at his home near Danbury.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury, with the Rev. Terry Roder officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Ida Grove, Iowa. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with a vigil wake service at 7 p.m., at the church. Armstrong Funeral Home of Danbury and Mapleton, Iowa, has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Timothy Lester Hupke was born May 3, 1952, at home in Mapleton, Iowa, the eldest son of Delbert "Blackie" and Beverly "Bubbles" (Schumacher) Hupke. Shortly after the family moved to Battle Creek, Iowa, where Tim grew up and received his initial education, graduating from Battle Creek High School with the class of 1970. He then furthered his education by attending and graduating from Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa, with a teaching degree. While at Westmar, Tim played golf on the college team. He then taught world history at Nishna Valley School, where he also coached basketball. It was during this time that he married and became the father of a daughter and son, Katie and Beau.

In 1977, Tim began his career with the Hoffman Insurance Agency, where he continued to work as a successful agent, co-owner, and corporate secretary the remainder of his life.

Tim was always recognized as a advocate of youth sports, coaching from the time he started his first job in teaching at Nishna Valley. Through the years, he coached boys and girls basketball, softball, girls golf and high school football. When he wasn't coaching, Tim was refereeing girls and boys basketball. He developed a deep devotion to the Iowa Hawkeyes in his youth. He became a Kinnick Society Member in 2000 as a season ticket holder for the football and basketball seasons, often piloting his own plane to attend the games.

Tim was an avid golfer and a member of Willow Vale Golf Course for many years. He was a member of the Independent Insurance Agents of Iowa as well as numerous other memberships, serving on many volunteer boards. He maintained a sincere love of animals as his home was often known as the Hupke Humane Society for the family's furry friends. No doubt, however, Tim's greatest passion in life was his family. Even though his life was busy, family was his priority, never missing his kids' ball games or other events.

Those left to lovingly remember Tim are his children and their spouses, Katie and Derek Bleil of Des Moines, and Beau and Jessica Hupke of Onawa, Iowa; his two granddaughters, Brooklynn and Bridgette Hupke; one brother, Scott (Bobbi) Hupke of Mapleton; five nieces and nephews, Jales and Jas Hupke, Jesley Hanke, Dylan Hupke, and Amber Wilcox; and his special friend and frequent driver, Sonya Sherrill of Danbury; along with his many coworkers and good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, John in infancy and Monty.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the the Maple Valley Anthon-Oto Athletic Program.
