Joan was born on Dec. 2, 1922, in Primghar, Iowa, the daughter of Ernest and Jennie (Geister) Rembe. She was raised in Primghar and graduated from high school in 1940. After high school, she moved to Sioux City where she worked for Sioux City Battery Co.

On Jan. 4, 1947, she married Gene Harris in Sioux City. The family moved to Indiana and to Hawthorne, Calif., in the early 1960s. In California, she worked in the electronic business, at J.C. Penney’s and then for Merle Norman Cosmetic Company in Los Angeles. She retired in 1988. The couple returned to Sioux City in 1995.

She was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church and church circle. She enjoyed going to the Young at Heart Club at the church. She liked to play cards, and do puzzles and games. She also enjoyed just sitting in her backyard watching the wild life. She was most proud of her needlepoint and made a Christmas stocking for each of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. What she loved most was spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband, Gene of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Cindy and Robert Hughes of Ashburn, Va.; four grandchildren, Bryan and Edna Hughes, Jennifer and Zach Gordon, Douglas and Gina Becker, and Bradley and Amy Becker; and four great-grandchildren, Hope Hughes, Sam Hughes, Adam Gordon, Irena Becker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Dr. Larry Becker; and three brother, David, Donald and Eugene Rembe.
