Vera Fern Haugen, 99, formerly of Sioux City, died July 14, 2011, in Broomfield, Colo., at the home of her son.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 29, at Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City.

Vera was born July 8, 1912, in Sioux City, the daughter of James and Lydia (Amick) Phillips. She married Clarence "Cub" Haugen on March 15, 1928, in Elk Point, S.D. He passed away on April 24, 1999, in Sioux City. She and her husband owned and operated various grocery stores and restaurants in Sioux City and Sioux Center, Iowa. Vera also owned a gift shop in Morningside.

As a member of Morningside Lutheran Church, she was active in Ladies Aid and chaired many successful smorgasbords enjoyed by the community. She was a member of the church choir for many years. She enjoyed bowling, crocheting and knitting and supplied many caps for newborns at St Luke's Hospital.

Survivors include her son and his wife, James and Janice Haugen of Broomfield, Colo.; her daughter and her husband, Joy and Keith Tellekson of Prior Lake, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her four brothers; and her sister.

Memorials in her name may be directed to Morningside Lutheran Church, 700 S. Martha St., Sioux City, IA 51106.
