Dorothea June Purgett, 82, of Sloan died Friday, April 6, 2012 at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, Iowa, with the Rev. Patrick O'Kane officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a Scripture wake service at 7 p.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa. Condolences may be left online for the family at www.rushfamilycareservice.com.

Dorothea was born on June 21, 1929, in Bloomington, Ill., the daughter of Frank and Minnie (Lockenvitz) Swibaker. She graduated from Bloomington High School.

Dorothea and Charles W. Purgett were united in marriage on July 2, 1946, in Springfield, Ill. In 1952, the couple moved to a farm near Luton, Iowa. Dorothea worked at the base exchange at the Sioux City Air Force Base for two years. She then worked as a waitress at Sioux Harbor for a number of years.

Dorothea was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Tabernacle Society, the American Legion Auxiliary, and belonged to the Salix Neighborhood Circle for more than 50 years. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her major hobbies were bowling, sewing, and playing cards.

Dorothea is survived by two sons, Roger (Joyce) Purgett and Charles A. (Carrie) Purgett; five daughters, Diane (Dennis) Bogenrief, Cinda Purgett, Linda (Tom) Michael, Nancy (Damon) Bollin, and Penny (Pat) Walker; 28 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Donald Swibaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; an infant daughter, Cheryl Lynn; two brothers, Francis Swibaker and James Swibaker; and four sisters, Bernadine Jackson, Evelyn Michael, Anna Johnson, and Velma Theonness.
