Josephine C. Peterson, 85, of Sioux City passed away May 28, 2012, at a care facility in Sioux City.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Community United Methodist Church in Sergeant Bluff, with the Rev. Deb Stowers officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation with the family will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

Josephine was born on Feb. 20, 1927, in Buckeye, La., to Stephen and Nettie (Harmonson) Crooks. She grew up in the area and graduated from Buckeye High School. She lived in the Louisiana area until 1953; she moved to the Siouxland area and had been a resident here ever since.

She married Ray Peterson on July 30, 1953, in Elk Point, S.D. He passed away on Nov. 15, 2011, in Sioux City. She was employed with Southern Bell as a switchboard operator and later with Northwestern Bell when she came to the Siouxland area. She also worked at Sunshine Foods Stores in Morningside.

She was a very active member at Community United Methodist Church. She was a Sunday School teacher and a member of the quilting group. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, traveling with her sisters, gardening, bridge and time with family and friends.

Survivors include her children, Ron and Renee Peterson of Sergeant Bluff, and Ann and Scott Leonard of Milford, Mich.; four granddaughters, Alix, Brittany, Amanda, and Stephanie; three grandsons, Josh, Billy and Brandon; and a sister, Ellen Golinar of Cleveland, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; her parents; two brothers, Preston and Huey Crooks; and a sister, Alberta Thompson.
