Richard Leo Hulce, 84, lifelong resident of Sioux City, died on Friday, July 20, 2012, with his family by his side, at Countryside Retirement Center in Sioux City.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 1212 Morningside Ave., Sioux City. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home, 1801 Morningside Ave., Sioux City. Richard was born Jan. 17, 1928, in Sioux City, to Herschel and Margaret (Matthews) Hulce. He grew up and attended Sioux City public schools, graduating from East High. He entered the U.S. Navy on Feb. 6, 1946, and was honorably discharged Dec. 5, 1947. After returning home, Richard went to work for Younkers Department Stores, working in the warehouse, later becoming the warehouse manager.

He married Kayana Meins at St. John's Lutheran Church in Cushing, Iowa, on Nov. 23, 1979. Richard retired in 1993 from Younkers. He decided to go back to work for Lanter Courier for two years and then returned to Younkers for another 10 years, finally retiring in 2006.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, having served as an usher and a hospitality minister. Richard enjoyed participating at the Woodbury County Fair. He also enjoyed doing crafts and word search puzzles.

Survivors include his wife, Kay Hulce of Sioux City; a daughter, Jennifer and her husband, Dustin Johnson of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Jackson, Emmett and Stella Johnson, all of Sioux City; a brother, Jack Hulce of Ventura, Calif.; numerous cousins; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Raymond, Laverne and Robert; and a sister, Dorothy Viken.
