July 24, 2012Nathan James Martin, 34, of Sioux City died Friday, July 21, 2012, at an Omaha hospital following a courageous battle with a brain injury.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Central Baptist Church, with the Rev. Lloyd Grant officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., and a 7 p.m. prayer service, all at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Nathan was born Dec. 28, 1977, in Sioux City, the son of Steve and Virla (Woock) Martin. He attended Sioux City schools, including North High School. He became a champion boxer, known as Nate "The Weasel" Martin. His sister Danielle gave him the name "Weasel" because of his quick and skinny legs.
On Dec. 1, 2001, Nathan became the proud father of a son, Makyal Olsen, and on March 15, 2002, he became the proud father of a little girl, Kaylee Suhorepetz. Nathan's best friend in life for the past 11 years was his beloved dog, Cyrus.
Nathan was a strong man and very true to his Christian faith. He was a great dad to his children and a wonderful uncle to his seven nieces and nephews. They shared many great adventures together in his short life on earth. He enjoyed fishing, camping, playing cards, jogging, lifting weights, martial arts and, of course, boxing.
Survivors include a son, Makyal Olsen of Sergeant Bluff; a daughter, Kaylee Suhorepetz of Sioux City; his mother and "bonus" father, Virla and Ron McKinley of Sioux City; his father and stepmother, Steve and Joann Martin of Hinton, Iowa; a sister, Danielle Johnson of Sioux City, and her children, Mason, Cadell, Kyler and Anaya; and a stepbrother, Adam Boomgarden of Hurley, S.D.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Virgil and Adeline Woock and Darwin and Darlene Martin, all of Sioux City.
Pallbearers will be Jason Tripp, Andy Bagshaw, Kevin Collins, Andy Timblin, Ernie Casey, Brent Johnson, Ryan Hovde, Adam Boomgarden and Luke Dondlinger.
