8 June 1882Died in Correctionville, June 3, 1882, of pneumonia, Melvin Moffatt. The deceased was born in Otsego Co., NY, in 1799. He served in the war of 1812, part of the time being stationed at Sackett's Harbor.
In 1832 he married Alania Wilson who survives him as his widow. He moved to Illinois in 1853 and to Iowa some years, later. He made a profession of religion in 1825 and united with the Perch River Baptist Church and since has maintained a Christian character.
He leaves besides his wife, 7 children, 3 of whom are in Iowa, D.W. and G.C. Moffatt, merchants here, and Mrs. J.A. Frey, wife of D. Frey of Ida Grove. There are living 19 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Since Mr. Moffatt has been among us he has been known as a most jovial and happy man.
