Michelle Hanson, 60, of Sioux City, passed away following a courageous battle against cancer on Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at her residence comforted by family.

Abiding by her wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Monday at the Wesley United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Nea Huggins officiating. A private family graveside service will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation, with the family present, will be 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Michelle was born on April 23, 1952, in Sheldon, Iowa, to Howard and Janice (Kroese) Lucas. She received her primary education in Sheldon, graduating with the Class of 1970.

Michelle married William C. Hanson on Aug. 5, 1972, in Sheldon. She received her college degree from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, in 1974. Michelle taught for a short while following her education, and also had various part-time positions, but found her greatest passion and pride in raising her children, and enjoyed being a homemaker and wife. She was an avid reader, often taking her daughters to the library, and found her greatest joy in spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Michelle is survived by her husband William "Bill” Hanson of Sioux City; daughters Ann Schneider and her husband Jon of Brookings, S.D., and Abby Welte and her husband Dave of Sioux City; grandchildren Sydney, Owen, and Cooper Schneider of Brookings and Avery and Harper Welte of Sioux City; father Howard Lucas of Sheldon; sister Joy Kilstrom and her husband Bob of Bettendorf, Iowa and family; sister-in-law Karen McDaniel and her husband Barry of Phoenix, Ariz. and family.

Michelle was preceded in death by her mother and parents-in-law Florence and Ernest Hanson.
