Richard Lee Tainter, 83, of Corona, Calif., formerly of Sioux City and Sergeant Bluff, died Thursday, April 12, 2012, at his home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Shepherd of The Peace Lutheran Church in Sergeant Bluff. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Waterbury Funeral Service. Online condolences for the family may be made at www.waterburyfuneralserviceinc.com.

Richard was born in Sioux City on May 3, 1928, the son of Cryus and Kathryn (Baker) Tainter. He attended Sioux City Community Schools, and graduated from Sioux City East High School with the class of 1946.

He was united in marriage with Mildred Godfredson in Sioux City on Aug. 1, 1948. To this union four children were born. The couple lived in Sioux City and later moved to Sergeant Bluff. Richard was an owner of Tainter Brothers Dry Goods in partnership with his brother, Jack ,for more than 40 years. He and Milly retired and moved to Corona in 1996.

Richard was a 40 year member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Sioux City, a former member of the Sioux City Exchange Club,and was currently a member of Shepherd of Life Lutheran Church in Lake Elsinore, Calif. He served on the Sergeant Bluff school board for several years, where he was instrumental in planning for the current buildings serving the school district.

He was a avid reader, who also enjoyed playing golf, tennis and dancing. Richard and family spent many summers in the Okoboji, Iowa area, enjoying the time away from home. The couple and their entire family celebrated their 50 wedding anniversary with a trip to Las Vegas in 1998.

Richard will be missed by his wife of 63 and a half years, Milly of Corona; his sons, Thomas Tainter and wife, Laurel of Sergeant Bluff, and Tony Tainter and his wife, Donna of West Des Moines; his daughters, Terri Graham and her husband, George of Madison, Wis., and Traci Temple of Vermillion, S.D.; his 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, James and Jack Tainter; sister, Shirley Jacobson; and great-grandson, Isaac Temple.
