Walter "Burt" Prestage 1925-2012

Walter "Burt" Prestage, 86, of Sioux City passed away Thursday, May 24, 2012, at his residence, after a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Roger Madden officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military graveside rites. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Burt was born Oct. 19, 1925, in Akron, Iowa. He was the son of Walter J. and Bertha (Anderson) Prestage. He graduated from Akron High School and then entered the U.S. Army. Burt was with the Fighting 69th Infantry and was a highly decorated veteran of World War II. His tours included the Battle of the Bulge, Germany and meeting the Russians at Torgau. He helped in liberating concentration camps. Burt was on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. on Sept. 9, 2008.

He married Mary Aspleaf on Dec. 31, 1952, in Sioux City. She died Aug. 8, 1963, in Sioux City. Burt married June Hansen on April 1, 1964, in Sioux City. She died Oct. 20, 2005 in Sioux City. Burt was a letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office in Sioux City for 30 years.

Burt had a sense of humor and was known for his one liners. He never met a stranger. Burt enjoyed spending time with his cat, Daffodil.

Survivors include his four children, Wayne Prestage and his wife, Pam of Tea, S.D., Tom Prestage of Colorado Springs, Colo., Carmella Love and her significant other, Vaughn Wampler of Hubbard, Neb., and Karl Prestage of Vancouver, Wash.; one brother, Verlyn Prestage and his wife, Betty of San Diego, Calif.; six grandchildren, Katie Sailors and her husband, Nick, Dusty Love and his wife, Erin, Jessica Prestage-Birk, Sarah Prestage, Rian Prestage and Zachary Prestage; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and both wives.

Pallbearers will be Steve Voss, Mike Fiesel, David Johnson, Dusty Love, Nick Sailors and Mark Dawdy. Honorary pallbearers will be Vaughn Wampler, Paul Dunn and Jim Love.

Memorials may be made in Burt's name to Hospice of Siouxland.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Siouxland and Pallative Care for the excellent care they gave to Burt.
