Duane J. Sudbeck, 84, of Sioux City was taken peacefully in his sleep on the evening of Feb. 12, 2012, at a Sioux City hospital following complications related to diabetes.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Michael Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Gary Snyder officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Iowa Army National Guard. Visitation will be 4 to 8 pm. Thursday, with Catholic Daughters of America rosary at 4 p.m., the family present 5 to 8 p.m., a Third Degree Knights of Columbus rosary at 6:30 p.m. followed by a chalice service by the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and a vigil service at 7 p.m., all at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Duane was born Oct. 27, 1927, in Crofton, Neb., the son of John and Mathilda (Maly) Sudbeck. He grew up in Crofton and graduated from Crofton High School in 1945. He served in the Merchant Marine/Army Transportation Corps from 1945 to 1947, then moved to Sioux City.

Duane married Mary Margaret McGowen on Aug. 21, 1950, in Hartington, Neb. He worked for Iowa Public Service (IPS) from 1947 to 1958. He then worked for McGuirk Skelly Oil from 1958 to 1963. He returned to work at IPS (later MidAmerican Energy) in 1963 and worked there until he retired in 1992.

Duane was a longtime member of Cathedral of the Epiphany Catholic Church, where he served on the finance committee, was an usher, lector and maintenance person. He was currently a member of St. Michael Catholic Church. Duane was a member of the Third Degree Knights of Columbus. He did volunteer work at the Queen of Peace, where he was known as "Mr. Outside."

Duane was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle. At his core, he was a strong, compassionate leader, who will forever be missed for his rides in the golf cart and repairs to the Tin Lizzy.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Margaret Sudbeck of Sioux City; five sons, John Sudbeck (Barb) of Tucson, Ariz., Jim Sudbeck (Penny) of Burlington, Iowa, Tom Sudbeck (Annette) of Stafford, Va., Tim Sudbeck (Cindy) of Kingsley, Iowa, and David Sudbeck (Laura) of Easley, S.C.; nine daughters, Jane Kirwan (Kevin) of Sioux City, Therese Giorsetti (Phil) of Flagstaff, Ariz., Bernadette Borgard (Matt) of Downers Grove, Ill., Marie Possley (Tom) of Wheaton, Ill., Maureen Shell (Greg) of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Margaret Sudbeck of Parker, Colo., Sarah Miller (Chuck) of Golden, Colo., Mary Adams (Mickey) of Flagstaff, and Rosemary Morrison (Greg) of Omaha; a sister, Charlotte Bohlin (Chuck) of Pender, Neb.; three brothers, Merlin "Bud" Sudbeck (Jeannie) of Seal Beach, Calif., Bob Sudbeck (Macrina) of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Harold Sudbeck of Sioux City; 41 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Daniel.

Pallbearers will be Ben Kirwan, Joshua Sudbeck, Todd Sudbeck, Nick Possley, Adam Shell, and Daniel Borgard. Honorary pallbearers will be Caleb and Pete Kirwan, Nathaniel, Zachary, Tyler, and Michael Sudbeck, Evan and Matt Possley, Aaron, Jarod and Jake Shell, Woody, Redmond and Luke Miller, and Ethan and Nick Morrison.

In lieu of flwoers, memorials may be made in his name to St. Michael Catholic Church, the Queen of Peace or Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools.
