Cecil E. "Gene" Hutton, 88, of Sioux City passed away Monday, Feb. 13, 2012, at Countryside Senior Living.

Per Gene's wishes, the body will be cremated. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, with veteran honors conducted by the U.S. Marine Corps. Burial of his cremains will be at a later date in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Gene was born on July 24, 1923, in Richmond, Ind., to Nelson and Clara (Eggebrecht) Hutton. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Marine Corps. Serving his country was something he was very proud of and continued to exemplify it by dedicating his time to the American Legion serving the Brunsville Legion Post 724 in many capacities which included commander and was also the county commander for which he received several awards.

He was married to Cecilia Geary on May 20, 1946, in Hiawatha, Kan. Gene worked for more than 33 years as a plumber for Beane Plumbing, retiring in 1982.

In his retirement he volunteered many hours to several groups which include RSVP, Meals on Wheels and the Senior Center. Besides all the time he spent volunteering, his family was very important to him, especially his grandchildren. He spent countless hours taking his grandchildren to events and activities. Gene was an avid card player enjoying bridge and pinochle.

Gene is survived by his wife, Cecilia Hutton of Sioux City; daughter, Michele (Rick) Foster of Sioux Falls, S.D.; granddaughter, Molli (Scott) Swearingen of Sioux City; grandson, Mike (April) Murphy of Newnan, Ga.; great-grandson, Dylan Swearingen; and three sisters, Arlene Schultz of Le Mars, Iowa, Coralee VandeMaheen of South Sioux City, and Roberta (Chuck) Williams of South Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Barbara Eye; and three brothers, Nelson Jr., Myron, and Marlin Hutton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice of Siouxland.
