Barbara Claire Taylor-Stewart, 88, of Sioux City died Sunday, July 1, 2012, at a local care facility following a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Trimble United Methodist Church. Private family graveside services will be in Sergeant Bluff Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Barbara was born on May 20, 1924, in Walthill, Neb., to George Washington and Bessie Claire (Hoisingtom) Taylor. She was baptized at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. After graduating from Walthill High School in 1942, Barbara moved to Sioux City.

While working for 15 and one half years at the Sioux City Police Department and City Hall as a parkette, Barbara would meet and marry officer Raymond E. Stewart on March 21, 1964. That resulted in 48 years of love, friendship, and adventure. They retired in 1974 and bought Stewart's Resort in Pelican Rapids, Minn., and spent the next eight years running it. Being snowbirds, Barb and Ray would spend their winters at the Siesta Village in Weslaco, Texas, until health and travel issues returned them to Sioux City full time in 1997.

Barbara had always had a love affair with music and various musical instruments. She found great pleasure in playing the organ alongside Ray's drum at various community functions.

Survivors include two daughters, Vickie Nelson-Andersen of Houston, Texas, and Linda (Steve) Glorfield of Sioux City; two sons, Rick (Terry) Stewart of Sioux City, and Mike (Juli) Stewart of Gainsville, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Stewart Bauley, Tom (Elizabeth) Glorfield, Carie (Mike) Mahler, Chad Stewart, Sara (Dewey) Howard, Katie (Virgil) Beach, Sierra and Charlie Stewart; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond E. Stewart; brothers, Kenneth, William "Bill" and Robert; a daughter, Nancy Richey; and two great-grandsons, Michel Mahler and Connor Howard.

In lieu of flowers, a tribute/memorial donation in Barbara Stewart's name to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org) would be a beautiful gift.
