Valerie J. Nordyke, 71, of Sioux City passed away on Wednesday, July 11, 2012, at a local hospital, comforted by family.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present beginning at 6 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Valerie was born on Feb. 1, 1941 in Sudbury-Suffolk, England, to Harry and Maggie (Parmenter) Wiffen. She was raised in England before moving to the United States in 1957. Following her education, Valerie married Bernard Nordyke, to which union four children were born. She worked at the Berlands Shoe Store and the Younkers Store in Sioux City. In 1968, Valerie’s three oldest children perished in a terrible accident. She moved to Chicago in 1970, where she worked part-time at a shoe store in addition to raising her youngest daughter. Upon returning to Sioux City, Valerie joined the staff at Hy-Vee Food Store, where she worked for 32 years, retiring in 2003 as the assistant deli manager. Valerie’s leisure time was spent with her daughter and granddaughter.

Valerie is survived by her daughter, Toni Tinker and her husband Tim of South Sioux City; granddaughter, Tiffany Tinker of South Sioux City; special friend, Frank Wiekoski of Sioux City; brothers, John Wiffen (Joan) and Spencer Wiffen (Joy), all of England, and Barry Wiffen of South Sioux City; sisters, Muriel Johnson of England, Jean Solomon (Bernard) of Arizona, and Joan McLeod (Charles) of California; and brother-in-law, Bernard Taylor of Sioux City.

Valerie was preceded in death by her parents; three children, Catrina, Kenny and Machelle; and two sisters, Joyce Taylor and Peggy Mandicino.

Pallbearers for the service will be Brad Beavers, Kurt Bornholtz, Tony Taylor, Dean Taylor, Barry Solomon and Rick Schroeder.
