John E. Deirup, 85, of Sergeant Bluff died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, at his residence.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Community United Methodist Church in Sergeant Bluff, with the Rev. Deborah Stowers officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the 185th ARW and the American Legion George Nelson Post 662. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. following by a Masonic rites service, at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service.

John was born Sept. 18, 1926, in Sioux City, the son of John Sr. and Helen (Ladd) Deirup. John graduated from Sergeant Bluff High School in 1944 and then attended Morningside College for three years before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in 1950. He received his honorable discharge in 1953 from 174th Fighter Squadron which was stationed in Sioux City.

John was united in marriage to Elaine Larsen on Feb. 27, 1955, in Akron, Iowa. John worked at the Stockyards as a cattle driver from 1946 until retiring in 1972. John also was a farmer during his life. He was known as a man of his word and expected the same of others. He was known as "Sweetcorn" during his career at the Stockyards.

John was a member of the American Legion Post George Nelson 662, the Morningside Lodge 615, A.F. & A.M., Fraternal Order of Eagles in South Sioux City, the Stockyard's Old Timers, and was a friend of Bill W.

John is survived by his wife, Elaine; his son, Craig Deirup and his special friend, Patty Stein of Sioux City; his daughter, Cindy and her husband, Steve Jennings of Des Moines; three grandchildren, Matt Nielsen and his wife, Erin, Tiffany Nielsen, and Stephany and her husband, Jeff Ireland; his great-grandson, Hunter John Deirup Nielsen, all of Des Moines; several stepgrandchildren and great-stepgrandchildren; other relatives; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Kathryn Cuthbert and Frances Bosworth.

The family would like to extend their thanks for the care and assistance of St. Luke's, Mercy Medical Center, Siouxland Paramedics, Salix Fire and Rescue and the Woodbury County Sheriff's Department.
