Douglas R. Dimick, 77, of Sioux City died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, at Embassy Rehab & Care Center in Sergeant Bluff, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Memorial services will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Per Douglas' request, his body has been cremated. A time of fellowship and sharing with the family will follow the services at Faith Lutheran Church.

Doug was born in Sioux City on Nov. 23, 1934. He attended Everett Elementary School, West Junior High and Central High School, where he served on the student council. He earned his bachelor degree at Morningside College in 1960. He was a staunch advocate of continuing education, and he himself attended Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., the Georgia Institute of Technology, and he earned his two-year certificate in transit management from Indiana University. He served in the U.S. Army for two years, receiving his basic training at Ft. Chaffee, Ark., and was stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas.

He worked for the U.S. Soil Conservation Service, the Iowa State Highway Department on survey crews prior to the construction of I-29 and was employed in the Sioux City Traffic Engineering office, where he served as Acting City Traffic Engineer for several extended periods. He completed his career at the Sioux City Transit Authority, beginning as a dispatcher and retiring as Transit General Manager.

Doug was a lifelong sports enthusiast, having lettered in baseball at Morningside College. He took pride in Sioux City high school athletes, knowing where their collegiate careers continued and how well they performed. He was active as a volunteer at the Sioux City Boys Club, where he served 10 years as the part-time athletic director and coached the intermediate-age teams that were the four-state champions in 1970. Doug played baseball for South Sioux City in the Northeast Nebraska league and several Sioux City recreational basketball league championship teams. His proficiency and competitiveness were proven as he was the three-time Boys Club free throw champion, completing 58 out of 60 throws to win the senior championship.

Doug was a member of the Noon Optimist Club, serving as its vice president, a member of the Noon Lions Club, the Missouri Valley Institute of Traffic Engineers (Mo. V.I.T.E.), Iowa Public Transit Association, Morningside College's M Club and Hi-Y.

He is survived by his significant other, Kay Rice; his children, Phil and Noreen Dimick of Dakota Dunes, Mary Jungers of McCook Lake, S.D., Linda Dimick of Round Rock, Texas, Karen and Eddie Bergenske of Sioux City, and Lori and Brad Lukken of Sergeant Bluff; Kay's children, Julie and Tim Konidas of Sioux City, and David Rice; 15 grandchildren; Kay's five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and his best pal, Lucky as well as feline friends.

His family, both past and present, were very important to Doug. He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Dimick; his mother, Alice Pearl (Torstenson) Dimick; his wife and mother of their five children, Elaine South on 11-16-69; his grandson, Justin Dimick; and Kay's grandson, David Lee Rice.
