SIOUX CITY -- Jeanne L. Dowd, 93, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2012, at a local hospital following a brief illness.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Matthew Miller officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery.

Jeanne was born April 27, 1918, in Columbus, Neb., the daughter of Arthur C. and Maude (Galley) Linstrum. She grew up in Des Moines and graduated from Roosevelt High School. Jeanne attended Grinnell College and the University of Iowa, where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority.

Jeanne worked for a brief time in Minneapolis before marrying Fred Bendinger on Aug. 3, 1946, in Des Moines. He preceded her in death on Feb. 1, 1971, in Sioux City. Later, she worked as an interior designer for Sioux City Stationery. Jeanne married Jack Dowd on February 6, 1981, in Gainesville, Fla. He preceded her in death on Oct. 4, 2008, in Sioux City.

Jeanne enjoyed reading, collecting antiques, playing bridge, and traveling, but her greatest love was spending time with her family. She was a former member of the P.E.O. Chapter K.E., Questers Club, Travelers Club, Terrace Hill Foundation, and the First Presbyterian Church. She was a lifelong cat lover.

Survivors include her daughter, Ann and husband, Pete Hathaway of Sioux City; son, Fred Stone and wife, Janis Bendinger of Kansas City, Kan.; four grandchildren, Greg and wife, Robyn Bendinger of Des Moines, Judith and husband, Grant Humphries of Little Rock, Ark., Holly and husband, Ryan Roberts of Des Moines, and Eric and wife, Jennifer Hathaway of Minneapolis; seven great-grandsons; two stepdaughters, Diane and husband, David Reiff and Cathy and husband, Bonnie Wates; and six stepgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Fred and Jack; and a sister, Ruth L. Smith.

Memorial gifts may be made in her memory to the Siouxland Humane Society, 1015 Tri-View Ave., Sioux City, IA 51103.
