SIOUX CITY -- Kathryn L. "Katy" Garner, 61, of Sioux City, passed away Thursday, March 8, 2012, at a local hospital.

Services will be 5 p.m. Sunday at Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army. Visitation will be 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Per her wishes, cremation will take place after the service.

Katy lived in the Leeds area of Sioux City and graduated from the Leeds High School. Katy joined the U.S. Army in 1969. She was with Company E, Women's Army Corps Training Battalion in Fort McClellan, Ala., and was trained in physical therapy. After her enlistment was over, she went to work at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center for a short time as a physical therapist.

From 1971 to 2012, she worked for (IBP) Tyson in Dakota City, moving to different plants from Amarillo, Texas, to Emporia, Kan., before settling in Pasco, Wash. She has had many job titles while working at Tyson, from meat cutter to her last job as material handler. She moved back to Sioux City in 2007 to be close to family and friends. She worked for Tyson up to the day of her death.

Katy loved her Yorkies and enjoyed her friends and family. She was always willing to help them in any way.

Katy is survived by her daughter, Sara Geniuk of Kearney, Mo.; her sister, Mary and her husband, Neale Towner of Sioux City; and her brother, Dennis Lee and his wife, Andrea of Eagle Grove, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Cora Bailey; and one brother, John Howard Garner.
