SIOUX CITY -- Robert G. Lanagan, 86, of Sioux City passed away peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home.

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Sunday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Craig Collison officiating. A private family burial will be Monday in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with family present at 6 p.m., at the funeral home. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Robert was born on Feb. 2, 1926, in Sioux City, to Harrison and Ruth (Decker) Lanagan. He received his education at East High School in Sioux City before enlisting in the U.S. Army in February 1944. Robert served his country as an aerial gunner in the 8th Air Force, 453rd Bomb Group of the U.S. Army Air Corps. He received the Victory Ribbon, the EAMET Ribbon, the APT Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal before receiving his honorable discharge as a sergeant in May 1946.

Upon returning to Sioux City, Robert worked at Sioux Bee Honey, where he met the love of his life, Joyce A Woodley. The two were married on Dec. 22, 1947, in Sioux City. Two children were born to the union, Kathleen and Scott. Robert joined the Sioux City Fire Department in 1948 and served Siouxland for more than 31 years as a firefighter, retiring as a captain at Station 4.

He was an avid golfer, enjoying his membership at Green Valley Golf Course. Robert also enjoyed bowling, fishing, and hunting. He was proud of his memberships to the International Association of Firefighters, and the American Legion.

Robert is survived by his children, Kathleen Sabo of Red Oak, Iowa, and Scott Lanagan and his wife, Pooky of Lincoln, Neb.; grandchildren, Steve Sabo and his special friend, Angie Merlo of Edgewater, Fla., Krista Sabo and her special friend, Blake Pritchard of Nodaway, Iowa, Josh Lanagan and his wife, Katie of Naperville, Ill., and Cody Lanagan of Sioux City; great-grandchildren, Kolton, Kailyn, and Kaleb Pritchard, all of Nodaway; sisters, Lorraine Griggs and Sharon Halasz and her husband, Buck; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Gary, Phil, Richard and Ronald; and wife, Joyce on June 30, 2006.

Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Sabo, Josh Lanagan, Cody Lanagan, Kolton Pritchard, and Kaleb Pritchard.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials made to Hospice of Siouxland.
