SIOUX CITY -- Sylvia Ann Watkin of Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Sioux City, passed away peacefully on Feb. 9, 2012.

The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William T. Hayes, Sylvia was born on Sept. 22, 1923 in Sioux City. She attended public schools in Sioux City, Emma Willard School in Troy, N.Y., and Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., where she earned her bachelor of arts degree in 1945.

In 1949, she married Clark W. Watkin, who, after 60 years of marriage, preceded her in death in 2010. Sylvia and Clark lived in Sioux City until the early 1980s, when they moved to Scottsdale.

Throughout her life, Sylvia enjoyed her membership in the Junior League chapters of Sioux City and Phoenix and the philanthropic projects in which she was involved and the many friendships she made.

We were blessed to have had such a wonderful, intelligent and caring mother, grandmother, sister and aunt who devoted her life to enriching ours. We miss her deeply and will forever cherish our memories of her and the wonderful times we shared together as a family.

Sylvia is survived by her four children, Joanie Watkin Mead and Clark Watkin, Jr. of Scottsdale, Janet Watkin of Phoenix, and Clifford Watkin (Mary) of Surprise, Ariz.; five grandchildren; her three sisters, Jeanne Hayes and Helen Orendain, of Missoula, Mont., and Janet (Al) Johnson of Orlando, Fla.; and eight nieces and nephews.

Our special thanks for the love and care given Sylvia by the staff at the Brookdale Freedom Inn of Scottsdale and Hospice of the Valley.
