Seth W Swiggett is Dead

Publisher of the First Newspaper in Sioux City Expires in Indianapolis

Seth W. Swiggett of this city, the publisher of the fist newspaper in Sioux City, and a prominent resident here, died of dropsy at the home of his son Charles at Indianapolis, Indiana on Tuesday of this week. Word of Mr. Swiggett’s demise was received today by John H Charles, with whom deceased had been associated in business since 1886.

The funeral was held yesterday at the home of Charles H. Swiggett, No. 930 North Meridan street, and the remains sent to Cincinnati, were they were interred in Spring Grove Cemetery by the side of his eldest son, James Allen Swiggett.

Mr. Swiggett was born at Denton, Caroline County, Maryland, in 1825. He came to Sioux City in the early fifties and on July 4, 1857, published the first edition of the Sioux City Eagle, the first newspaper-ever printed here. The Eagle office was in a log cabin at the corner of Third and Pearl streets. The name of the paper was later changed to the Register and in 1860 Mr. Swiggett sold his paper and went east. He did not return to Sioux City until 1886 and since that time he has been in the Office of John H Charles. He has accumulated considerable property in this city. He left here with his wife the first of last January to visit their children of whom there are four. He was sick about three weeks before his death. Mrs. Swiggett will not return to Sioux City.
