SIOUX CITY -- Daniel J. Kirwan, 74, of Rosholt, S.D., and formerly of Sioux City, passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., all at the church. Condolences may be posted online at meyerbroschapels.com.

Dan was born June 14, 1937, in Gregory, S.D., the son of Daniel F. and Clara Belle (Norwood) Kirwan. He grew up in Fort Randall, S.D., and graduated from Fairfax High School. While in high school, he helped build the Fort Randall Dam at Pickstown, S.D. and continued working on the construction of the dam following graduation.

After his marriage to Marilyn F. Salmen on Sept. 17, 1956, he worked in the grocery business for 12 years for Hinky Dinky in both Norfolk and Lincoln, Neb.

In 1962 the couple moved to Sioux City. Dan worked for Terra Industries, Inc. for 32 years and retired in the position of plant superintendent. He survived the 1994 explosion of the chemical plant.

The couple retired to their lakeside home at Lake Traverse. He was a member of St. Boniface Church in Sioux City and St. Anthony Church in Browns Valley, Minn. He also belonged to the Eagles Club and the Elks Club.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; five children and their spouses, Christine and Warren Reeves of Kingsley, Iowa, Jeannine and Mike Waddell of Aurelia, Iowa, Lori and Dalfred Haynes of Florrisant, Mo., Daniel F. and Suzanne Kirwan of Blair, Neb. and Kevin and Mary Jo Kirwan of Sioux City; two brothers and their wives, James and Shirley Kirwan of Bonesteel, S.D. and Phillip and Mitzi Kirwan of Sioux City; a sister, Karol Kocer of Wagner, S.D.; eight grandsons; six granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel F. and Clara Belle; and a brother-in-law, Thomas Kocer.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, and gift bearers will be his granddaughters.

Memorials may be made in his name to the American Heart Association.
