SIOUX CITY -- Betty J. Johnson, 87, of Sioux City died Friday, May 4, 2012, at Casa de Paz in Sioux City.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Kenny Hsu officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

Betty, the daughter of Clarence and L. Leona (Levine) Nyreen, was born on Feb. 21, 1925, in Rosalie, Neb. She moved to Sioux City as a young child and had been a resident of Sioux City ever since.

On Aug. 5, 1942, she married Albert O. Johnson in South Sioux City. He passed away on April 24, 2005, in Sioux City. Betty worked as a waitress, also in retail sales in Sioux City. Her most important job was that of a mother to her children.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran church in Sioux City. She volunteered at Morningside Nursing Home, where she was also a resident advocate for the Morningside Nursing and Rehab residence. She enjoyed fishing, hunting, crocheting baby blankets, soft sculpture dolls, painting, ceramics, butterflies, Christmas ornaments, scrapbooking, and crafts.

Survivors include her daughters, Beverly and Harvey Eliason of Salix, Iowa, and Joann Jensen of Luck, Wis.; six grandchildren, Eric and Vicky Eliason, Bianca and Jason Gaspard, Brian Jensen, Autumn and Shawn Hutton, Kristen Jensen and Jason White, and Jared Jensen; nine great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Francis D. and Arlene Nyreen of North Sioux City, Ronald and Myrna Nyreen of Virginia Beach, Va., and Gary and June Nyreen of North Sioux City.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Albert; her parents; and a brother, Dale Nyreen.
