SIOUX CITY -- F.E. Dutch Elgert, 89, of Sioux City passed away Monday, July 11, 2011, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Dutch was born March 12, 1922, in Waterbury, Neb., to Erich and Alice (Hansen) Elgert. He attended schools in Waterbury. Dutch served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, stationed in the Pacific.

He was married to Vanetta Barrett on Feb. 7, 1942, in Dakota City. She preceded him in death on Sept. 26, 1999, in Sioux City. Dutch was a truck driver for Corn Belt Supply for many years. After he retired from trucking and the Teamsters Union, he started working for Hy-Vee and retired from there at the age of 85.

In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and camping. He was a member of the Civil Defense for Sioux City. Later in life, he enjoyed traveling with his wife. He also enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandkids.

He is survived by his 10 children, Dianna (Gerald) Heibel, Carroll Johnson, Jeanette (Bill) Thomas, Tom (Susan) Elgert, Sally (Richard) Howard, Mark (Debbie) Elgert, Doug Elgert, Dale (Stasia) Elgert, Cathy (Todd) Oberg and Scott Elgert and special friend, Terri Carlson, all of Sioux City; 36 grandchildren; numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Jay Elgert of Oklahoma; and three sisters, Esther Cheros of Omaha, Meta Martin of California, and Sandra Flock of Omaha.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and two grandsons.
