SIOUX CITY -- Steven James Welp, 42, of Sioux City, died Wednesday, June 29, 2011, in Sioux City.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Augustana Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Del Olivier officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Steve was born Nov. 2, 1968, in Algona, Iowa, son of James F. and Ruth (Woolley) Welp. He was raised in Bancroft, Iowa. He attended the University of Iowa and graduated from Briar Cliff University with a bachelor of arts degree.

He was married to Cindy Dickman on Aug. 16, 1997, at Augustana Lutheran Church in Sioux City. He was employed in sales and investments for various companies in the Sioux City area.

He was a member of the Toast Masters and Sioux City Business Networking. He was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church, where he was a member of the congregation council, stewardship mission and was foundation board president. He volunteered many hours at his children's schools and coaching his son's basketball team and assisted with his children's other sporting activities.

In his free time, he loved to hunt, fish and play golf. He loved helping friends with various projects. He also loved to play practical jokes and telling jokes, but most of all, he loved spending time with his family. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his kids. One family tradition was a two-on-two baseball game between Steve and Craig, his brother-in-law, and his son and nephew. Steve was an avid University of Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota Vikings fan.

Survivors include his wife, Cindy of Sioux City; two sons, Trevor and Tyler Welp, both at home; a daughter, Madalyn Welp at home; his parents, James and Ruth Welp of Prescott, Ariz.; a brother, Jim and Linda Welp pf Westchester, Ohio; three sisters, Lori and Dennis Kruse of Leesburg, Va., Linda and John Baker of Barrington, Ill., and Jeanette and Rick Asa of Westmont, Ill.; his mother-in-law, Jo Ann Dickman of Sioux City; a brother-in-law, Craig and Kari Dickman of Sioux City; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and his beloved dog, Buster Brown, his hunting partner.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Redmond, Ray Farrens, Steve Roberts, Kelly Ridgeway, Bill Frueh and Craig Dickman.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established for his children's education.
