BRONSON, Iowa -- William R. Christman, 68, of Bronson died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital of complications following surgery.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Carolyn Bittner of Hornick (Iowa) United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Willow Township Cemetery, Holly Springs, Iowa, with military rites and Masonic rites conducted by Morningside Masonic Lodge 615. Visitation will be 4 to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Christman was born June 28, 1933, in Sioux City, the son of Harold and Albertine (Hall) Christman. He was raised in the Smithland, Iowa and Bronson area and had lived around the Bronson most of his life.

He was employed with Swift and Co. for many years and had spent his life farming around Bronson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Morningside Masonic Lodge 615 A.F. & A.M. He enjoyed stock car racing and had raced for 40 years. He most recently raced at Crawford County Speedway in Denison, Iowa and Buena Vista Raceway in Alta, Iowa. He had previously raced at Park Jefferson Speedway in Jefferson, S.D., and at tracks in Webster City, Collins Field in Le Mars, Onawa, Shelby County and Harlan, Iowa, Raceway Park in South Sioux City, Fairmont, Minn., Yankton, S.D. and Norfolk, Neb. He also raced at special events in Mason City, Iowa, Corning, Iowa, Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City, S.D., Huron State Fair in Huron, S.D., and in Aberdeen, S.D. He also enjoyed fishing and traveling.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine A. Schmitt/Christman of Bronson; a daughter and her husband, Sheri and Dale Holcomb of Gillette, Wyo.; a son and his wife, Kelly and Tammy Christman of Dakota City; a brother and his wife, Craig and Cheri Christman of Oyens, Iowa; three sisters, Sandra Christman of Omaha, Beverly Christman of Sioux City and Carol Bligh of South Sioux City; two cousins, Barbara and her husband, Jim Golding of Waukesha, Wis., and Diana Swain of Seattle, Wash.; a nephew, Clint Christman of Oyens; a niece, Christi Bligh of South Sioux City; and six grandchildren, Chad and Lin Stephens of Gillette, Marja Stephens of Gillette, Garret Stephens of Gillette, Kelly Christman Jr. of Dakota City, Christy Christman of Dakota City and Candance Christman of Dakota City.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
