ANTHON, Iowa -- Marie Eleanor Jones, 89, of Iowa City, Iowa, formerly of Anthon, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City following a sudden illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon, with the Rev. Bill Schreiber officiating. Burial will be in Mt. St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Anthon. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a rosary led by the Catholic Daughters of America at 4 p.m., and a vigil wake service at 7 p.m., all at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.

Mrs. Jones was born Nov. 22, 1912, in Hamburg, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Edgarda Lee (Speaks) Castleman. After graduating from high school in Hamburg, she attended Ohio State University and graduated with a bachelor's degree from the State University of Iowa.

She married Merl R. Jones on Nov. 23, 1937. During their marriage she did not work outside the home but moved with her husband and sons to homes in Kansas, Colorado, South Dakota and Iowa. In 1946, Merl's job with the United States Department of Agriculture took them to Anthon. After his death in 1965, she received her master's degree in library science from the University of Minnesota.

She was a member of the Iowa Library Association board and held an honorary life membership in that organization. She was a former longtime member of the Anthon Public Library board. Until her retirement she was assistant director of the Sioux City Public Library, and coordinator of the Indian Library Project in cooperation with the Sioux City Indian Center and the Winnebago Tribe in Winnebago, Neb.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon, a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America, a former member of the Anthon Women's Club, and a member of the Anthon Community Club. During her college years, she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi social sorority. In her later years, she was a delegate to older Iowan's Legislature, and a member of the Area IV Agency on Aging Task Force.

Survivors include three sons, Lawrence L. and his wife, Catherine of Iowa City, Robert N. and his wife, Suzanne of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Donald W. of Sioux City; grandchildren, Neal, Chad and Caleb of Twin Falls, Jeremy and his wife, Emily of Cape May, N.J., and Christopher and Katherine (Kate) of Iowa City.

She also was preceded in death by a son, Roger Rapheal; two sisters, Dorothy Solzman and Florence Christiansen; and a brother, Clarence.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Anthon Library or a charity of choice.
