ANTHON, Iowa -- Nels P. Anderson Jr., 86, of Anthon died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Church of Christ in Anthon, with the Rev. Kody Killian officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion McNiff Post 389 of Anthon. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.

Nels Peter Anderson Jr. was born May 7, 1916, in rural Anthon, the son of Nels and Marie (Madsen) Anderson Sr. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps for one year before entering the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945. He was drafted and entered the military July 10, 1941 at Fort Crook, Neb. His unit was Battery B, 751st AAA Battalion, which was an anti-aircraft personnel. He was appointed to sergeant first class for Squad 14, serial number 37082246 on Aug. 10, 1945. He was stationed in Saipan, Okinawa and Hawaii.

On Feb. 25, 1948, he married Shirley Ann Swanson. His life's work was in farming and herwas currently farming southeast of Anthon. In May 2001, after having skin grafts for a third degree burn, he moved to the Correctionville Care Center.

He was a member of Church of Christ, American Legion McNiff Post 389 and Cerulean Masonic Lodge 550 of Anthon. He found pleasure in time spent gardening, fishing, golfing, bowling and playing cards.

Those survivors left to cherish Nels' memories include a son, Norman of Anthon; two daughters and their husbands, Susan Marie and Grant Fitch of Correctionville and Peggy Ellen and Larry Kluckman of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Larry Kluckman Jr., and Catherine, Christy and Chase Fitch; a great-granddaughter, Katelyn Dose; two brothers, Homer Anderson of Anthon and Kenneth Anderson and his wife, Phyllis of Moville, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Paul "Dorothy Anderson of Correctionville; and many other relatives, neighbors and good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Holger, Paul and Elmer.
