Chester L. Yates, 78, of Polk City, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City and Lawton, Iowa, died of lung cancer Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at Mercy Hospice-Johnston.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Polk City. Burial of the cremains will be at a later date in Lawton, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Neptune Society of Iowa in Ankeny, Iowa.

Mr. Yates was born in Lawton and had lived in Sioux City for 37 years. He had lived in Dallas Center, Iowa, for 15 years before moving to Polk City two and half years ago. He was a retired yardman with Payless Cashway Lumber Co.

He was a member of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church. He was a naturalist and enjoyed gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Zenithe; a son, Robert of Alleman, Iowa; a daughter, Nancy Miller of Polk City; two sisters, Lucille Schwedler of Moville, Iowa, and Catherine Dreeszen of Akron, Iowa; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Memorials may be directed to Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church or Mercy Hospice-Johnston.
