SIOUX CITY -- DeNelda "Dee" A. Nelson, 74, of Sioux City passed away Monday, March 28, 2011, at a local hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael Catholic Church, with the Rev. Gary Snyder officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., a rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Dee, the daughter of Fred and Olivia (Wiebelhaus) Schieffer, was born March 13, 1937, in Crofton, Neb. She graduated from Crofton High School and later attended Wayne State College.

She married Larry A. Nelson Sr. on April 18, 1956, in Vermillion, S.D. Dee was a homemaker, raising her children by day and working by night. She worked as a waitress for many years at several Sioux City restaurants. She also worked at Palmer Candy as well as activities director for Indian Hills Retirement Home.

She was a member of the Catholic Woman's League and was also a Eucharistic minister at St. Michael's Catholic Church.

Family was Dee's greatest passion. She loved camping with her children and grandchildren in Lake Park, Iowa. She also enjoyed square dancing, sewing, crocheting and finding treasures at Saturday morning garage sales. Dee was a brave and courageous fighter, she beat all odds when the doctors told her she had three years to live with her emphysema and proved them wrong by making it 20 years.

Dee is survived by her husband, Larry Sr. of Sioux City; her daughter, Vickie Nelson of Overland Park, Kan.; son, Larry (Tamara) Nelson Jr. of Sioux City and their daughter, Pam Nelson of Sioux City; son, Randy (Mickey) Nelson of Sioux City and their children, Eric Nelson and Sean Belt of Shawnee, Kan., Jim (Nikki) Nelson of Sioux City, Andrew Nelson and Maddie Loucks of Sioux City, and Melissa Nelson and fiance, Jeff Cartmill of Sioux City; son, Rick (Michelle) Nelson of Gunnison, Colo., and their children, Tyler Nelson and Natalie Taylor of Gunnison, Spencer Nelson and Mary Matthews of Saint Paul, Minn., and Savannah Nelson of Gunnison; one brother, Marnie (Rose) Schieffer of Crofton, Neb.; three sisters, Marcelene (Emery) Schmitt of South Yankton, Neb., Teresa Foner and Don Hanzlik of Niobrara, Neb., and Arlis (Dave) Hunhoff of Yankton, S.D.; one sister-in-law, Patty Schieffer of Crofton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Gervase and Delwyn; two sisters Victoria in infancy, and Darnell; and one grandson, Joseph.

The family wishes to thank Hospice of Siouxland for three years of great care.
