Funeral Services Held Tuesday For Herschel L. Owens
Hershel L. Owens, 72, Sioux City, formerly of Moville, died Saturday, July 22, 1995, at his home following a long illness of cancer.
Services were at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, 1995 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Sioux City with the Rev. Paul G. Sieveking officiating. Burial was in Graceland Park Cemetery under the direction of Christy, Smith & Hockenberry Morningside Funeral Home.
Mr. Owens was born April 25, 1923, in Luton, Iowa and lived most of his life in the Siouxland area. He graduated from Central High School and attended Morningside College. He married Eunice Johnson April 17, 1949, in Sioux City. He farmed near Danbury, Iowa, for seven years and then in the Moville, Iowa area until his retirement in 1988. He was a Lynks Seed Corn dealer for 30 years.
Mr. Owens was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church where he served as an elder. He was a volunteer at the Siouxland Senior Center with the tax service for the elderly program. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theatre. He also served in the National Guard for four years.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter Dianne and her husband John Becker of Craig, Iowa; three sons and their wives, Brian and Jeanne of Sioux City, James and Beth of Seattle, Wash., and Thomas and Anne
Of Grimes, Iowa; four grandchildren, Jon Aaron, Justin and Corey Becker and Nicole Owens; two brothers and their wives, Wayne and Kenna Mae of Sioux City and Ralph and Maxine of Sergeant Bluff, and four sisters, Sylvia and her husband, Andy Andela of Sioux City, Lavina and her husband Rubel Iverson of Salix, Iowa, Geraldine and her husband, Donald Harris of Sioux City and Marie Pickens of Sloan, Iowa.He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Pearl (Howard) Owens; two infant sons, Mark and Matthew and two brothers, Cecil and Alva.
