Richard L McCoy, 54, associate district court judge, died Friday, Nov. 10, 1995, at a Sioux City hospital after being stricken at his residence.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Elwood Rieke and the Rev. Robert Vaage officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 9 p.m. today with the family present 6 to 9 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7 p.m., followed by a prayer service at the Nelson Berger Northside Chapel.

Mr. McCoy was born July 3, 1941, in Onawa, Iowa, the son of Delbert and Ethel (Cox) McCoy. He attended schools at Climbing Hill and Storm Lake, Iowa and graduated from Hays School in rural Storm Lake. He received a bachelor’s degree in business in 1964 from Buena Vista College, Storm Lake. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He continued his education at Drake University and earned his Juris Doctorate in 1971. He married Mary Jenkins April 15, 1967, in Onawa. He came to Sioux City and practiced with several Sioux City attorneys and also worked with the Sioux City and Woodbury County law offices. He was with the Thomas Rehan Law Firm at the time of his appointment to associate district court judge at the County Law Enforcement Center in 1992.

Mr. McCoy was an active member of First Lutheran Church, where he was a past president of the church council and served on various church boards. He was a member of the Iowa and Woodbury County Bar Associations. He was a member of the Judge Association, serving on the Fine-Fee Collection Committee and a member of the Big Brothers-Big Sisters. He was a member of Tyrian Lodge 508 AF & AM, the Sioux City York Rite and Scottish Rite Bodies and the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple, where he was a member of the Oriental Band and Jesters.

Survivors include his wife, two sons, Kevin Richard of Sioux City and Jason Marc of Iowa City, Iowa; a sister, Sharon Koening and her husband, Arthur of Bloomington, Ind; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Michael Hellige, Larry Claeys, Douglas Oss, Don Mathews, Bruce Thomas and Robert Rehan.

A memorial has been established in Mr. McCoy’s name for Mid-Step Services of Sioux City.
