CUSHING, Iowa -- Larry Lee Johnson, 73, of Cushing passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2011, at his residence in Cushing.

Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Methodist Church of Cushing, with the Rev Sheryl K. Ashley officiating. Burial will be in the Cushing Cemetery of Cushing. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein, Iowa.

Larry L. Johnson was born March 2, 1938, in Cushing, Iowa, to L.D. "Bud" and Leona Mary Ida (Wink) Johnson. He graduated from the Cushing Consolidated High School in 1956. He joined the U.S. Army National Guard, Ida Grove Unit after graduation. He served from 1956 to 1965 and was honorably discharged in 1965.

He married Shirlene Paulsen on March 15, 1958, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Together they had four children, Tamie, Larry Daniel "Dan", Trudie and Danette. Larry made his living doing what he loved which was farming, raising and feeding livestock and trucking.

He was involved with the community by serving as 4-H leader for the Rock-Kee-Union 4-H Club, Woodbury County Fair Superintendent, Woodbury County and NW District Soil Conservation Commissioner and Woodbury County Cattlemen. He was awarded the National Soil and Water Conservation Award in 1986. He was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church of Cushing.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Shirlene, of 53 years; four children, Tamie (Kirk) Gaes of Storm Lake, Iowa, and their children, Tara (Michael) Whitmire of Omaha and Autumn Gaes of Alta; Dan (Cheryl) Johnson and their daughter, Cassie of Cushing; Trudie (Brian) Volkert and their sons, Anthony and Andrew of Correctionville; and Danette (Ron) Morgan of Larrabee and their children, Aaron (Czarina) of Scottsdale, Ariz., Nicole, Nathaniel and Kyle of Larrabee, Iowa; one brother, John (Delores) Johnson; one sister, Miriam (Leroy) Jensen; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Daryl; his mother-in-law; father-in-law; three sisters- in-law; and three brothers-in-law.
