SIOUX CITY -- Dorothy M. Murfield, 89, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, April 9, 2011, in Sioux City.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael J. Erpelding officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service. Dorothy was born Aug. 8, 1921, in Manilla, Iowa, the daughter of James and Hazel (McMahon) Costello. She graduated in 1939 from the Manilla High School. Dorothy worked for the telephone company in Manilla after graduation. Dorothy then worked for Western Union in Minnesota, was transferred by the company during the war to work in San Francisco and Los Angeles, Calif.

On Dec. 24, 1941, she was united in marriage to Lake E. Murfield in Manilla. Dorothy and Lake moved back to Iowa after the war. Dorothy worked at several business in the area, including Carl's Mousetrap, Sodrac Park, H&R Block and

the R.E. Scott Company. During the 1980s and early 1990s, Dorothy and Lake owned and operated the Lawton

Pub. In 1993, she began working for Mercy Medical Center and retired in 1999.

Dorothy enjoyed crocheting afghans for her family and playing bingo.

Dorothy is survived by four daughters, Kathy and her husband, Jerry Williams, Pauline and her husband, Frank Blassl, Patty and her husband Rodney Woods and Theresa Fitzgibbons; two sons, Mike Murfield and his wife Roxie and Matt Murfield and his wife Kathy; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Eleanor Costello; her cousin, Mary McNabb; her little dog, Mac; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Lake on May 2, 1990; her parents; two brothers; and one great-grandchild.

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the Hospice angels.
