.SIOUX CITY -- James P. Scholtes, 83, of Omaha, Neb., formerly of Sioux City, passed away Friday, May 20, 2011, in Omaha.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa. Condolences may be left online for the family at www.rushfamilycareservice.com.

James Peter Scholtes was born Nov. 11, 1927, in Sioux City, the son of John and Vivian (Spencer) Scholtes. He was raised and educated in Sioux City. On Sept. 17, 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Coast Guard during World War II until his discharge on Sept. 16, 1948.

James and Doris Drenkhan were united in marriage on March 24, 1950, in Danbury, Iowa. The couple made their home and raised their three daughters in Sioux City. Jim was employed at Robert's Dairy a number of years and then was an optician for Dr. Reeder, Sioux City Optical and Precision Optical. The couple moved to Omaha in 1996 to be near their daughters.

He was a member of Morningside Lodge 615 AF & AM, Sioux City Consistory and Sioux City Abu Bekr Shrine and was a past officer in the Foot Patrol. After his move to Omaha, he also was an active member of the Millard Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife, Doris of Omaha; three daughters, Victoria Ann Scholtes of Omaha, Susan and her husband, Kenn Wessel of Sandy, Utah, and Kim and her husband, Greg Johnson of Omaha; five grandchildren, Trevor, Natashia and Vanessa Copple, BreAnna Johnson and Tysen and his wife, Holly Johnson; four sisters, Georgia Prescott of Sioux City, Joan (Russ) Rulon of Decorah, Iowa, Gail (Larry) Flodin and Dorothy (Ron) Rasmussen, all of Fairbanks, Ark.; two sisters-in-law, Ellen and Adeline Drenkhan, both of Mapleton, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Delores Scholtes; and four brothers-in-law, Bill Prescott and Don, Clifford and Marvin Drenkhan.

Memorials may be directed to the Shrine Crippled Children's Hospital.
