SIOUX CITY -- J. David Madsen, 68, of Granger, Ind., formerly of Sioux City, passed away suddenly of a pulmonary embolism Saturday, May 14, 2011, at St. Joseph Regional Medical in Mishawaka, Ind.

Private services will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of Hahn Funeral Home in Mishawaka.

David was born Nov. 6, 1942, to Francis and Lenore (McKenna) Madsen in Sioux City. He graduated in 1960 from Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City, where he played football. He served in the Marine Corps for four years. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota, a master's degree from DePaul University in Chicago and a doctorate in psychology from Syracuse University. He recently retired from a career as a clinical psychologist.

He was married to Barbara Lewis for 35 years.

David is survived by his wife, Barbara Lewis; a brother, Ronald (Colleen); three sisters, Mary Fran Hanrahan, Judy Fosvik and Elizabeth Madsen-Genszler; a daughter, Tracy (Allen) Mitts; a son, Judd Madsen; seven grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers-in-law, Carl Fosvik, Tom Hanrahan, Joe Brody and David Genszler.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the U.S. Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation in honor of J. David Madsen (www.mcsf.org).
