SMITHLAND, Iowa -- Marjorie E. Slota, 88, of Smithland passed away Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oto, Iowa. Officiating will be the Rev. Brian Danner. Interment will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.

Marjorie Eudora Martin was born Dec. 3, 1922, to Hiram Grover and Edna (McQuillian) Martin in Battle Creek, Iowa. She lived in the Midway area and moved to the Smithland area as a young child.

She married Elmer Moose in Elk Point, S.D., on Dec. 15, 1938. To that union three daughters were born, Coella, Carol and Linda. In 1943, the family moved into the home in Smithland in which Marjorie resided until 2006. Elmer passed away on Nov. 1, 1957.

On June 25, 1966, Marjorie married Joseph Slota at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oto. He passed away on Dec. 9, 1999. She worked at Ben Franklin in Mapleton, Iowa, for 25 years. In 2006, she moved into Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.

Marjorie was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oto and St. Mary's Altar Society. She also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary Leslie Seaton Post 0666 of Smithland and the Smithland Cemetery Society. Marjorie enjoyed reading, traveling, and visiting with friends and neighbors. While she loved life itself, her true love was her family.

Survivors left to hold Marjorie's memory in their hearts include her three daughters and their husbands, Coella and Robert Craig Nelsen of Newman Grove, Neb., Carol and Vincent McDonald of Oto, and Linda and Jim Kirkendall of Sloan, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Corrine (Ken) Dawson, Chris (Nancy) Nelson, and Carole (Jim) Bates, Todd (Shonn), Kevin (Patricia), and Michael (Peggy) McDonald, and Stacy Mitchell and Jesse (Michelle) Kirkendall; 23 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph (LaVonne) Martin of Smithland; a sister, Donna Sierras of Lakeview, Calif.; a special niece, Alice Parsley of Smithland; and a host of friends and neighbors.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Elmer Moose and Joseph Slota; two brothers, Donald and Gene Martin; a sister, Farsina Price Biede; and a great-granddaughter, Kelsey Rae McDonald.
