SIOUX CITY -- Rogene Frances Bernhard formerly of Sioux City went to our Lord on Jan. 12, 2011, surrounded by her family after a courageous three-month battle with complications from heart disease.

A celebration of her life will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's in Larkspur, Calif. A reception will follow the service. Arrangements are under the direction of Keaton's Mortuary in San Rafael, Calif.

Rogene Frances Bernhard was born Nov. 1, 1928, in Sioux City, to Matt and Mamie Dunn. She graduated from Central High School and the University of South Dakota, a proud Pi Phi. She moved to California in 1953 to join her sisters.

Rogene met and married Robt. F. Bernhard (deceased) in 1957.

She was a parishioner of St. Patrick's for 56 years. She was a member of St. Patrick's Women's Club, Catholic Social Services and volunteer. "Genie" lived life to the fullest! She was her son's best friend, her daughter's mentor and the example for her granddaughters, and the best mother-in-law Mark could ask for.

She was a fantastic mother to her children, Mark H. Bernhard of Larkspur, Calif., Teresa J. Schieg (Mark) and wonderful grandmother to Morgan, Taylor and Brooke of San Jose, Calif. She was a special mom to Patrick J. Donohue of Sausalito, Calif. She is survived by sisters, Shirley Hamilton of Larkspur, and Dorothy Smith of Modesto, Calif. She was loved by numerous nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Irma Donohue of Sioux City.

The family prefers donations to Guide Dogs to the Blind in San Rafael or the American Heart Association.
