SIOUX CITY -- Ethel A. Stephens, 92, of Sioux City entered into a more peaceful time Jan. 1, 2011, at Sunrise Retirement Home after a long a bountiful life.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. John Hagberg officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. with Sister Maryls Becker, at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Ethel was born April 20, 1918, in Ponca, Neb., to Archie and Daisy (Tubbs) Whitlock. She moved to Sioux City with her family at a young age, where she made her home most of her adult life.

She married Gauis W. Stephens on Dec. 10, 1939, in Dakota City. The couple made their home in Burton, Neb., for nine years before moving to Sioux City.

She enjoyed being with her immediate and extended family. She enjoyed cooking for them, especially her homemade bread, egg noodles and Kleventefkie. She was active in several Sioux City bowling leagues and loved to play cards. She was also active in different kinds of arts and crafts and became very accomplished at crocheting. She was a 50-year member of the Moose Lodge, where she served as the Senior Regent on two different occasions.

She is survived by two sons, Robert (Mae) and William (Sherol) Stephens; two daughters, Lila Solomon and LeAnn Stephens, all of Sioux City; five grandsons, Bob (Ann), Ross (Jenny), Chris Stephens, Gregg (Stacey Schager) Colomon of Sioux City, and Chad (Kristen) Stephens of Sioux Falls, S.D.; two granddaughters, Susan (Mike) Rydstrom of Sanborn, Iowa, and Misty (Jeff) Georgen of Mesa, Ariz.; 23 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; two sisters-in-law, Audrey Spichs of Grand Island, Neb., and Edna Whitlock of Hawarden, Iowa; and a special friend, Ada Wright of Sioux City.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years; a daughter, Ethel Jean; three brothers, Glendon, Jack and Robert Whittlock; three sisters, Opal Berens, Hazel Sierk and Voilet Eastman; a grandson, Thad Stephens; and five great-grandchildren, Trisha Solomon, Brendon, Bridget, Breanna and Kaylie Stephens.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Bob, Ross, Jacob, Chris Stephens, Gregg Solomon and Michael Rystrom.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Sunrise Retirement Home and Hospice of Siouxland for their excellent care.
