MOVILLE, Iowa -- Dale Eugene Benedix, 68, of Moville died Saturday, July 7, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville, with the Rev. Scott Meier officiating. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Christy-Smith McCulloch Chapel in Moville.
Mr. Benedix was born July 18, 1932, in Correctionville, Iowa, the son of Fred L. and Marie M. (Michaelson) Benedix. He attended rural schools and graduated from Pierson (Iowa) High School. He then worked on the family farm. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 with C Battery, 52nd Field Artillery Battalion, stationed in Korea. His awards and decorations include the Korean Service Medal with a Bronze Star, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.
Following his discharge, he married Dolores Wendel on Feb. 20, 1955, in Moville. The couple farmed the Benedix farm until 1964, when they moved to Moville and farmed near Moville until 1966. They then moved to the Galva, Iowa, area and farmed until 1970, then moved to Cushing, Iowa, and farmed until 1974. In 1975 they moved to the Wendel family farm, where they remained until retiring in 1993. In October 1994 they moved into Moville. He also was employed as a bus driver for Woodbury Central Schools beginning in 1985.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served as church custodian, a former church council member, former co-superintendent of Sunday school, member of the church dart ball league and active in the men's group. He was a former Woodbury County Extension board member and former 4-H leader for the Sliver Creek Township 4-H Club in Ida County. He was a member of Kingsley Swingers square dance club. He enjoyed gardening, dancing, collecting John Deere memorabilia and toy school buses.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Rodney and his wife, Rebecca of Maquoketa, Iowa, Steven of Washington, Staff Sgt. Kelly of Glendale, Ariz., and Brian and his special friend, Rochelle Ehl of Lawton, Iowa; two daughters, Lisa and her husband, Eric Hunter of Federal Way, Wash., and Kimberly Benedix of Moville; two brothers and their wives, Fred and Shirley and Robert and Marie, all of Correctionville; a sister and her husband, Theresa and Daker McQueen of Pierson; and 15 grandchildren, Ashley, Katie, Michelle, Frederick, Steven, Jarrod, Rebekah, William, Tiffany, R.J., William, Seth, Robert, Cody and Austin.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Pallbearers will be Gene Wink, Bud Reese, Duane Hopp, Dean Hummell, Jeff Wendel and Dave Benedix.
