SIOUX CITY -- Virginia L. Drilling, 87, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2010, in Sioux City.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tony Nester officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Mrs. Drilling, the former Virginia L. Howe, the daughter of Dr. Ewart C. and Darlene (Gunsolley) Howe, was born Nov. 28, 1922, in Sioux City. She graduated from East High School in 1941. She attended Morningside College for two years, where she was president of the freshman women's organization and affiliated with Kappa Zeta Chi Sorority. She transferred to the University of Iowa, majoring in art.

During World War II, Mrs. Drilling worked as a secretary at the Sioux City Air Base and later as a dental assistant in her father's dental practice. She married Donald W. Drilling on Dec. 31, 1955, in Sioux City. He died June 24, 1997, in Sioux City.

She was a 50 plus year member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority and the P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter JH, for 66 years serving as a past president. She belonged to Grace United Methodist Church and the Dakota Dunes Country Club.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Donald E. and Carol Drilling and William M. and Sharon Drilling, all of Sioux City; and four grandchildren, Megan, Sarah, Gregory and Lindsey.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a stepfather, James W. Law.

A memorial has been established in her name in care of the family.
