SIOUX CITY -- June De Gunther Koberg, 92, of Sioux City died Aug. 9, 2010, following a sudden illness. She passed away at a Sioux City hospital while in the presence of her three loving daughters. June had just returned from a short trip to Minnesota, where she accompanied many of the family during a bicycling trip. The pictures of June smiling with the group will be greatly treasured.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tony Nester officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery next to her parents, Flossie and William Malm and husband, Harold De Gunther. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

June O. Malm was born June 1, 1918, in Wilmot, S.D., to Flossie and William Malm. As many of her close friends will note, the date of her birth was a carefully guarded secret until achieving her milestone 90th birthday. The Malm family moved to Sioux City, where June was a proud graduate of East High School in 1936.

She met and fell in love with Harold De Gunther and was married on July 29, 1944, shortly after his return from Italy, having served there during World War II. They raised their three daughters in Sioux City, making sure they all graduated from East High School. June and Harold owned and worked together in business at the W.R. Anderson Distributors in Sioux City. Harold passed away in 1989.

June traveled after Harold's death and was fortunate enough to meet a familiar face from East High. Robert W. Koberg was living in Florida at the same time June was visiting. They married on June 1, 1990. Robert Koberg and June led a very active retirement until Robert died in 1996. He is buried in Arlington Cemetery, as a war hero, U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr.-Ret.

June was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Martha/Mary Circle. She was recently honored by the church, recognized for her longevity as an active member. She also was a good golfer, belonging to Floyd Park Women's Golf and South Ridge Golf Clubs. One memorable moment for her occurred on July 28, 1988, when she hit a hole in one at Floyd Golf Course. June was also an avid bridge player, who enjoyed playing with her friends. She was a member of the International P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter MK, the Miercoles Club of Sioux City and many others. She was pleased and proud to have recently renewed her driver's license.

June is survived by her three daughters and their families. First daughter, Debby and Bill Brock of Ames, Iowa, their son, Andy and Pam and children, Ella and Grant of Worcester, Mass., their daughter, Ashley Christiansen and son, Renzo of Ames; second daughter, Terri and Jim Stoner of Iowa City, Iowa, their daughter, Heather of Royal Oak, Mich., and son, Dave of Newport Beach, Calif.; and third daughter, Janis and Bill Burdick of Emmetsburg, Iowa, their daughter, Jessica and Ryan Libby of Crystal Minn., and son, Bill and Kim Burdick and daughter, Caroline of Emmetsburg. June is also survived by extended stepchildren in the Koberg family.

She was preceded in death by Harold De Gunther and Robert Koberg; and her loving mother and father, Bill and Flossie Malm.
