SIOUX CITY -- Walter Douglas Walker, 87, of Sioux City died Tuesday, July 27, 2010 in Wheeling, W.Va.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Morningside Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Sowers officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services Monday at the church. Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Walter was born Aug. 17,1922, in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Oliver P. and Annie (Rolfe) Walker. He moved to Sioux City as a small child and attended school here. He graduated from East High School. After high school, he entered the U.S. Navy and served from 1942 until 1948.

On June 1,1952, he married Betty R. Oxendine in Arlington, Va. The couple moved to Amazonia, Venezuela, were they did missionary work with the native people. After they returned to Sioux City, Walter when to work for I.B.P. as a butcher. He worked there for 20 years.

He was a member of the Morningside Baptist Church, Veterans of Foreign War and AARP. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; three sons, Nate Oliver, Sam Edward and his wife, Joan, and Dan George, all of Sioux City; two grandchildren, Jennifer Marie Walker and Matthew Edward Walker; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Charlotte Hogge, Mary Swearengen and Virginia Walker; and three brothers, Kenneth, Leonard and Oliver.
