SIOUX CITY -- Everett "Del" Bergsmith, 84, of Sioux City died Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, at his daughter's home, surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. James Bruch officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Everett was born Jan. 11, 1926, in Sioux City, the son of Everett E. and Edna (Linke) Bergsmith. He graduated from Central High School in the class of 1944. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre.

On July 19, 1954, he married Dorothy M. Sedlacek at Vodanny Church in Scotland, S.D. She died July 2, 2006, in Sioux City. His employment started with the Pepsi Cola Co. He then managed Sioux Village Bowling Alley. He worked for Booth Fisheries before working in security for Sioux City Night Patrol and most recently, for Wilson Trailer.

Del was an avid baseball fan, especially the Cubs. In earlier years he enjoyed bowling and played on many leagues.

Survivors include four daughters, Terry Benson of Murphy, N.C, Lauri (Eric) Oehlerking of Wichita Falls, Texas, Debbie (Steve) Smith of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Cathy (Alan) Clark of Sioux City; a son, James Everett Bergsmith of Sergeant Bluff; four grandchildren, Joe (Stefanie) Bergsmith, Marie Oehlerking, Elizabeth Clark and Kasie Benson; three great-grandchildren, Kira, Ella and Wyatt Bergsmith; a sister, Elizabeth (Don) Topf of Quincy, Ill.; and a brother, Ronnie (Pat) Bergsmith of Ocean City, Md.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a sister, Helen Traufler; and a sister-in-law, Helen Bergsmith.

Pallbearers will be Eric Oehlerking, Alan Clark, Steve Smith, Joseph Everett "Joe" Bergsmith, David Fischer and Mike Mertens.

Del's family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Hagin, Shannon and staff at the June E. Nylen Cancer Center; and to Jill, Doris, Marguerite and Kellye with Hospice; and also a special thanks to Rashelle Katseres.

Memorials may be directed in his name to Hospice of Siouxland.
