SIOUX CITY -- Robert L. Schlag, 75, of Sioux City passed away Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010, at a local hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Morningside Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Kevin Lee officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Robert was born May 14, 1935, in Madison, Wis., the son of Robert Newton and Doris Virginia (Leonard) Schlag. He lived in Wisconsin and across Iowa, before coming to Sioux City in 1944. He attended Longfellow, East Junior and East High School. He attended Iowa State University and the University of South Dakota, where he obtained a master of natural science degree.

He married Shirley Ann Raynor in 1959, at Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City. He was a teacher for 48 years. He dedicated 41 years to the Sioux City Public Schools, retiring from East High School in 2003., He taught at Western Iowa Tech Community College for seven years, retiring in 2010.

Robert was a lifelong photographer and printed hundreds of pictures. He also had a love of old cars, history, playing cards, teaching and enjoying his wife, children and grandchildren in everyday activities.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Sioux City; a son, Rex (Diane) Schlag of Sergeant Bluff; a daughter, Renee Schlag of Maryville, Mo.; and four grandchildren, Ashley Schlag of New York, N.Y., Megan Schlag of Chicago, and Shelby and Kamyrn Schlag of Sergeant Bluff.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, John.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Security National Bank for the Robert Schlag Memorial Fund created to provide a mathematics scholarship in Robert's memory.
