SIOUX CITY -- Chester Charles Carroll, 89, of Sioux City passed away Friday, Nov. 26, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Glendale Baptist Church, with the Revs. James Wilson and Frank Gillet officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Chester was born March 2, 1921, at Kennebec, Iowa, the son of Lester and Clara (Waples) Carroll. He grew up and lived in the Castana-Turin, Iowa, area, attending school near Castana. Chester entered the U.S. Army in 1942, serving during World War II and receiving the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

Chester married Betty Jane Graham on July 4, 1948, at Castana. He worked for Roberts Dairy for more than 32 years, retiring in 1982. Betty passed away on Sept. 2, 1996.

Chester was an active member of Glendale Baptist Church, where he had been Sunday school superintendent for many years. He was a member of the Blue Lodge Masons in Castana for more than 50 years and was an Abu Bekr Shriner. He served as a S.C.O.R.E. mentor and delivered Meals On Wheels for more than 18 years.

Survivors include his daughters, Susan and Jeff Spates of Sioux City, Sandra Wych and Gary Dudley of Des Moines, Iowa, Linda and Dale DeVries of Garden Grove, Calif., and Julie and Knud Knudson of Sioux City; a son, Randall and Rose Carroll of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; grandsons, Seth and Tawnya Wych, Wade and Tiffany Wych, Andy Spates, Adam Spates and fiancee, Darcie, Kieth "K.C." Knudson and Graham Carroll; granddaughters, Jessica and Steven Birchall, Emma Carroll and Stacy Palm; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Catherine Chapman of Moville, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Dr. Richard Risk of Fairfield Bay, Ark.; and a sister-in-law, Ruby Muto of Wilmington, Del.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty; a son-in-law, Jim Wych; and eight brothers and sisters.

The family would like to thank the girls from Coyote Canyon and the guys and girls from the Argosy for their kindness toward Chester.
