DANBURY, Iowa -- Gertrude "Gert" Schimmer, 93, of Danbury died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, at Morningside Rehab and Care Center in Ida Grove, Iowa.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury, with the Rev. Terry Roder officiating. Burial will be in the Danbury Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with a 3:30 p.m. rosary by St. Mary's Rosary Society and a vigil wake service at 7 p.m., all at the church. Visitation will resume 9 a.m. to service time Monday at the church. Armstrong Funeral Home of Danbury and Mapleton has been entrusted with the care of the arrangements.

Gertrude M. (Gert) Schimmer was born Sept. 20, 1917, at Danbury, Iowa, the daughter of William and Martha (Uhl) Collins. She grew up in Danbury and was educated at the Danbury Catholic School.

On Feb. 14, 1939, she married Lawrence F. Schimmer at Danbury. The couple was blessed with two children, Ronald and LeRoy. Larry died July 1, 1990. Gert and her husband owned and operated Schimmer Skelly Service for 40 years. Gert also worked for the Danbury Post Office for 25 years retiring in 1980. She also worked for Colbert's Market and Dean's Den.

She was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury and St. Mary's Rosary Society. After Gert retired she loved spending time with her grandchildren. She also loved to dance. If anybody said "dance," the dancing shoes were on. She had a great love of people and there was no stranger to her. She also loved to sew and crochet.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Judy Schimmer of Ida Grove, Iowa; a former daughter-in-law, Jackie (Shimmer) Schmid of Red Oak, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Todd Schimmer, Teri Sieve, Tammi Siedl, Troy Schimmer, Michelle Schimmer, Mike Schimmer and Shane Schimmer; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Along with her husband, Larry, Gert was preceded in death by her parents; her two sons, Ronald and LeRoy; her brothers and sisters, Bill, Lewis, Joe, Josephine "Sis", Helen, Alice, Laura, Clarence and Alfred; and several nieces and nephews.
